THE NATURE OF GOD. 083

Astonishingly, there are some that sort of hang their faith on a certain understanding of the nature of God. To a certain extent, I do see the importance of believing, in simplicity, what the Bible clearly teaches about God’s nature. Even in that statement though, I recognize that I myself am liable to err. Did Jesus have any sort of beginning? Is the Holy Spirit a being, a person, both or neither? What is the trinity? The Godhead? Is all this pagan? Catholic? Do Christians worship three Gods? All these questions are valid questions that I believe can be answered, however, probably not to the depth that some wish. While I won’t be answering those questions in this post (though I would love to, by God’s grace in another post I will get to) what I will say is this.

It is unambiguously clear that almost (I say almost because I know I don’t have an exhaustive knowledge of the entire Bible) every time God invites us to -know- Him, He mentions something that is a derivative of or is associated to His power and or character. The end.

Jeremiah 9:23 Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: 24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.

Here, it is riches, wisdom and might to -know- that God exercises lovingkindness, judgment and righteousness, in these things God takes delight.

To know God is primarily to know His character.

Here are some quotes to meditate upon.

Those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children forever;” but “the secret things belong unto the Lord our God.” Deuteronomy 29:29. The revelation of Himself that God has given in His word is for our study. This we may seek to understand. But beyond this we are not to penetrate. The highest intellect may tax itself until it is wearied out in conjectures regarding the nature of God; but the effort will be fruitless. This problem has not been given us to solve. No human mind can comprehend God. Let not finite man attempt to interpret Him. Let none indulge in speculation regarding His nature. Here silence is eloquence. The Omniscient One is above discussion. {8T 279.1}

Silence is eloquence.

We are as ignorant of God as little children, but as little children we may love and obey Him. Instead of speculating in regard to His nature or His prerogatives, let us give heed to the word He has spoken: “Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10. {8T 279.3}

Though we the depths of God’s nature may not be open to us, the message of the Bible is that the depths of His character is,

God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.

In this, as little children we are inspired to love, in this we are inspired to obey, in this we can be still and just know that Jehovah is God.

“Canst thou by searching find out God? Canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection? It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? Deeper than hell; what canst thou know? The measure thereof is longer than the earth, And broader than the sea.”

Job 11:7-9

God, we are still,

IJN,

amen
