“I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” Genesis 3:15.

The first promise of the Bible, and how powerful it is. Something I often ponder is why did God have to do this and what would have happened if He didn’t? I invite you to contemplate this as well. Romans 8 may help the contemplation.

Romans 8:7 To be carnally minded is death...because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

The word enmity is synonymous with hatred, and hatred in one sense is the antonymous of love. If God must have put hatred between mankind and the serpent, I believe it was because the natural fruit of sin would have been the development of harmony between mankind and the serpent and hatred between mankind and God. The fruit of this could sort of be seen when Adam blames God for the woman that “God gave him.” This is also seen in Romans 8. If God did not do what He did in Genesis 3:15 it would have been impossible for us to have been subjected to the law of God, and thus impossible for us to be on God’s side.

God declares: “I will put enmity.” This enmity is not naturally entertained. When man transgressed the divine law, his nature became evil, and he was in harmony, and not at variance, with Satan. There exists naturally no enmity between sinful man and the originator of sin. Both became evil through apostasy. The apostate is never at rest, except as he obtains sympathy and support by inducing others to follow his example. For this reason, fallen angels and wicked men unite in desperate companionship. Had not God specially interposed, Satan and man would have entered into an alliance against Heaven; and instead of cherishing enmity against Satan, the whole human family would have been united in opposition to God. {GC 505.2}

I don’t think we realize sometimes just how far we can go, or just how evil we are, but the more I think of how messed up I am, the more I find confidence in the fact that GOD CHOSE ME, He desires me still, I am fully known and still fully loved by God.

I take my eyes of self, and fix them on Jesus.
