WHEN SUCCESS CAUSES FAILURE. 015

I think that because of the type of person I am, I think about success a lot. In everything I do, I aspire to be successful. However, it wasn’t until recently that I realized that success is a two-fold thing. Luke 5 explains what I mean.

“And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. 6 And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. 7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.”

Okay, what happened after they enclosed a “great multitude of fishes”?

The Bible says their nets brake.

Well, if their nets brake did they lose all the fish they just caught? Well, you say, maybe the nets broke in a place that didn’t compromise its ability to hold on to the fish, maybe the nets just got slightly torn.

Okay, question.

How far do you have to be out in the sea to have caught enough fish to make your nets brake? Pretty far I’d assume, Jesus told them to "launch out into the deep."

Well, what happened when while they were in the deep, their ships began to sink? What prevented the ships from totally sinking before they got to land?

Something doesn’t make sense logically... but that’s the point.

Jesus didn’t only perform a miracle in allowing them to get such a big catch, He performed another miracle in allowing them to –sustain the catch.

Sometimes success causes us to sink and brake. This is why we need the miracle of Jesus not only to attain success, but also to maintain it, without breaking or sinking.

Many times though, we get the success, and then we leave Christ, forgetting that without Christ daily sustaining and maintaining us, the very same success, that we now run off with away from Christ, can be the very same thing that causes us to brake and sink.

Lord give us true success, and please perform the miracle that prevents that success from making us brake and sink IJN, amen.
